Tonight’s commute home took on a different and unexpected adventure, although it could be titled, "I’ve always wanted to try this route." At the top of Walton Rd, where I normally go west over I-170 on Midland Blvd, I was forced to go right because the overpass was closed as part of the protection detail related to VP Joe Biden possibly being in route from The Pageant to the airport. So, I resolved to do a more North-South route, staying on the east side of I-170, a route I looked at and even half attempted a couple years ago. On top of that, I had to deal with (sit in) stop & go car traffic in several places.
One con for this route is having to carry my bike up 8-10 steps to cross a pedestrian bridge. Then one of the side streets was a steeper climb than I have on my normal route – and its pavement was horribly torn up. Going up wasn’t as much of a problem, as going down the other side – very cautiously. Then after negotiating the crossing at Natrual Bridge (could almost picture Frogger here) so I could make a left and make my way to Springdale, I then made my way up to N Hanley Rd. Needing to go north (left) on N Hanley, I was just over a mile from joining my normal route at Scudder Ave. There was so much traffic heading north that I decided not to brave making the left hand turn & ‘go with the flow’, but opted, instead, just veer over to the nearby sidewalk cruise along it. Suffice it to say, I am one who firmly believes bicycles do not belong on sidewalks, but this was an exception I was willing to compromise and make. Included in this decision was knowing that this sidewalk is not in a populated area, and if I did encounter anyone else along the way I would politely negotiate safe passing.
My overall review of tonight’s commute home would be to borrow a line from the movie Apollo 13, "Well, let's hope we don't have to do that again."
